Apple unveils Vision Pro spatial computer headset

Apple has unveiled its much-anticipated mixed reality headset, the Apple Vision Pro, though it describes it as “a revolutionary spatial computer that seamlessly blends digital content with the physical world, while allowing users to stay present and connected to others”.

The headset looks more like a virtual reality headset than an augmented reality headset. The headset is powered by visionOS, which Apple says is the world's first spatial operating system.

Vision Pro will be available in the US early next year for $3,499, seven times the price of Meta's recently-announced Meta Quest 3 headset.

Tim Cook said that today marks the start of a new era for computing. Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing, just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing. Vision Pro is built upon decades of Apple innovation and has a revolutionary new input system. It opens up new opportunities for our developers.

Users can use Vision Pro to create a private, portable 4K display with the help of the device's support for Magic Keyboard and Magic TrackPad.

Vision Pro can transform any space into a personal movie theatre with a screen that feels 100 feet wide and an advanced spatial audio system. Movies and TV shows can be watched by users.

Vision Pro offers Immersive Environments, where a user's world can grow beyond the dimensions of a physical room with dynamic landscapes that can help them focus. A user can control how present or immersed they are in an environment.

Everyone on the call is reflected in life-size tiles as well as spatial audio. A digital representation of themselves created using Apple's most advanced machine learning techniques is reflected in Vision Pro during a call. Users can do things together like watch a movie.

Apple Vision Pro now has an App Store where users can discover apps and content from developers, as well as access hundreds of thousands of familiar iPhone and iPad apps that run great and automatically work with the new input system. Vision Pro and visionOS can be used by Apple's developer community to create new app experiences.
