The Universal-Netflix Streaming Movie Deal Is Paying Off

Some of the most popular animated films on the streamer are from DreamWorks and Illumination.

Two years ago, the company struck a deal that is helping to drive demand for its movies.

After a four-month window where they would stream on Peacock, Universal agreed to license its animated films to the streaming service. It is paying dividends for the larger streamer to have a hot hand at the box office.

As of April, the movie catalog had the second largest share of demand in the U.S. It was behind both Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video.

Compared to other services, Netflix relies less on movies to draw in viewers. The movies make up 40% of total demand for the service. The majority of the catalog demand from films is derived from services like Disney+.

The restructuring of its film division could be illuminated by these figures. The company is reducing the number of new releases in order to maintain high quality. Despite having produced several hit titles in recent history, the latest offerings from the streaming service have failed to impress critics or the public.

It's highly dependent on licensed films. Two of the top 10 most in-demand movies in April were originals. The two most in-demand movies were "Minions: The Rise of Gru" and "How to Train Your Dragon". This supply was locked up because of the popularity of animated fare.
