Disney  Reveals Exclusive ‘American Born Chinese’ Poster Art Designed by Acclaimed Artist James Jean at SXSW World Premiere Event

There was a fire in Austin, Texas, on March 15, 2023.

James Jean created exclusive poster art for the Disney+ Original series at the Paramount Theatre in Austin, Texas. In attendance at the event were cast members Ben Wang, Daniel Wu, Chin Han and Sydney Taylor, all of whom were celebrating their fellow cast members at the Academy Awards. All eight episodes of the Disney branded television series will be exclusive to Disney+.

James Jean is a poster artist.

Jean's own experiences as an Asian American are reflected in the new art for Jin Wang. The film " Everything Everywhere All at Once" had its world premiere at the South by Southwest festival last year.

Jin is captured on his way to school by Jean's new design. While the backpack alludes to cultural and emotional baggage, the flora emerging from within is a pastiche of the paintings of Giuseppe Castiglione, an Italian missionary who became a court painter in China during the Qing dynasty. Jean created a timelapse video to show his process while designing the piece of art for "American Born Chinese."

Jean said that while watching "American Born Chinese," her ears burned and she was afraid to sit in her seat. The pain of recognition was caused by the ill-fitting clothes, the feeling of being on the outside, and the sound of parents arguing. I've never seen my own adolescence depicted in this way before.

James Jean's work explores imagination and reality through narrative-driven compositions. His approach to mark-making blends figuration with abstract in works that are technically precise and gestural. He embraces other media, including sculpture, installation and video. Jean uses aspects of history, tradition, literature, nature and personal experience to draw upon art historical antecedents such as Baroque paintings to Japanese woodblock prints and Chinese silk scroll paintings.
