Marketing your business needn’t be anxiety-inducing says business guru, Racquel Collard

Growth strategy is something that anyone who has started a business will attest to being a lot of work. How do you excel through marketing when budgets are small but not overcapitalised?

Racquel Collard has some great ideas.

Collard has built a wealth of knowledge for entrepreneurs who would like to take control of their business and explore marketing options.

The importance of defining who you are, branding, content marketing strategies and key messaging guidelines is laid out in Collard's new book.

We sat down with Collard for a deep dive into her best advice for anyone looking to take that next step.

Your new book is about to be launched. What is the most important thing that women can learn from reading it?

Thanks a lot. I am excited about this time for me. One of my big bucket list items was to write a book, and being able to build a business that meshes with my other needs is amazing.

Women should build businesses that they want to run.

Not being tied to someone else's idea of success. It is possible for us to live our best lives and be the best versions of ourselves, while having an impact on the world. Who doesn't like that?

This book will help women do that.

What was the writing process like for you, when you wrote your book?

I was working with clients while I was working on my initial brain dump. I was able to see what worked and what didn't through that work. During the writing process, live feedback was very valuable.

After extensive editing, I was lucky to have some amazing readers who helped me refine it further. This made it easy to understand, cut out a lot of jargon, and helped me focus on the important parts. My book coach, Athena Daniels, helped me stay on the straight and narrow as well.

What made you want to help women in small businesses?

In my book, I say that the economic cost of gender inequality worldwide amounts to 160.2 trillion dollars because of women not having equal access to education, employment, financial resources, power and opportunities to participate in decision-making. I want to change these statistics by using successful self-employment and business ownership.

I have spent a lot of time running marketing teams in male-dominated industries and found that working with female clients gave me a lot of joy and satisfaction.

The vast majority of business and marketing books out there were written by men, and they approach business and marketing very differently to me, so I thought sharing my approach could help other women. I can only reach one person at a time.

How have you seen marketing knowledge become a catalyst for business success as a female business owner?

Many of my clients come to me because their marketing isn't working, or they don't know where to start, or they hate what marketing is all about.

There are many different ways to market your business. Other business owners are similar to you. It isn't the same as the next person's goals. You have your personality quirks. It's not the same as how the next person can market theirs.

There are some things you need in order to market your business that make sense to you. This book is about that.

The only way to grow a business is through marketing.

In many industries, in many business sizes, and at many stages, I have rolled out these fundamental principals over and over again. It works for me. You can find the way that works for you. It doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth if you discover that marketing is an important part of your business success and a catalyst for growth.

What motivates you?

I really like what I do. When marketing is used for good, I like it. I help women build their businesses. It isn't hard to get out of bed in the morning and push myself to get the corporate job done with the women I work with.

I have designed my business in a way that makes me happy while still having the lifestyle I want. I want that for every woman who wants to start her own business.
