Billions of credentials, personal records stolen through data breaches: report

A new security report has shown that threats exposed or stole 22.62 billion credentials and personal records last year.

According to the new State of Cyber Threat Intelligence report from risk intelligence firm Flashpoint, there is a growing body of evidence that shows how extensively cyber threats are interrelated.

Cybercriminals operate to the tactics, techniques, and procedures they use to execute their attacks, and what that means from an intelligence and security perspective.

According to the report, the cycle of illegal communities is marked by the motions of takedowns and resurrections.

It's called a game of cat-and-mouse. To get a sense of where this cycle begins and ends is to miss the point. Like other cycles in the threat landscape, the cycle of illegal markets should be seen as a self-serving mechanism that is powered by competition, technology, communication preferences, law enforcement partnerships, know-how and other intangibles.

Threat actors use multiple teams or individuals with different motives and targets, as well as various tools to streamline the tasks that contribute to their main goal, the compromise of a victim's systems.

As though one threat is separate from another, organizations cannot afford to view, prepare for, mitigate, and prevent these threats.

It's difficult and costly to identify, prioritize, and mitigate persistent and evolving threats. CISOs should unify and rally their security and intelligence teams behind a single source of truth that integrates their cyber threat intelligence, fraud, vulnerability management, and IT security teams, as well as other functions.

The trends, data, analysis, strategies, and insights that will impact the way in which security and intelligence teams tackle challenges in 2023 are examined through this lens.
