After a spirited and organised display saw them hold the Scottish champion at half time, there was a different sense of bitterness for Liam Fox's side.

Celtic huffed and puffed but couldn't get past the Dundee United defensive line.

Two goals by Jota on 51 minutes and a penalty by Mooy five minutes later put paid to their first half work.

On January 8th, Fashion Sakala broke the deadlock on 54 minutes and three minutes later, it was the other way around.

Celtic are nine points clear at the top of the table, while United are 20 points ahead of Ross County and 12 points in front of Kilmarnock.

United face Killie in a huge match at Rugby Park on Wednesday night, but they can take a lot of confidence from the first half performance.

In the Scottish Cup, Fox made four changes.

Ian Harkes and Glenn Middleton were back. Out went Charlie Mulgrew.

There was no Tony Watt, who was linked with a move to Belgium.

New South Korean forward Hyeonghu Oh was named to the bench while Celtic welcomed back two injured players.

It was a big day for the captain of the club, as he made his 400th appearance for the club.

Last time they were here, Kyogo and Jota grabbed hat tricks, and they were hungry for more.

After Jota picked him out with a forward pass, Kyogo had a chance to put Celtic up. The Japan forward's shot sailed over the bar.

Dundee United kept a disciplined shape and launched their own raids whenever they felt like it.

The best chance they had was Steven Fletcher's goal.

Mooy flashed a dangerous ball across the goals but didn't find a home.

There was a scare when Kyogo closed down the United keeper at a fast pace and almost hit him.

The dangerous Jota and Reo Hatate tried to shoot from the edge of the box, but Birighitti made a great save to deny them.

But Joe Hart in the Celtic goal had to look smart to run out and get to the ball first when he and Fletcher were competing to see who could reach the ball. Celtic could have been in serious trouble if the ball had gone to Glenn.

Kyogo had a clear shot on goal after a terrific forward pass by Johnston, but Birighitti had to make a great save.

Jota saw a shot atBirighitti. When Hatate's chip to the back post bounced back off the upright and Craig Sibbald made a fantastic block to stop Mooy crashing the loose ball into the net, hearts were in mouths.

Celtic thought they had a penalty when Don Robertson pointed to the spot after Birighitti hit Kyogo on the head after punching the ball clear.

The United's keeper did not commit a foul.

The spot kick was overruled by the travelling fans who booed the spot kick.

The home fans gave United a warm reception as Robertson signaled the start of the break.

This was a huge improvement for United, as they had been whitewashed at this point in the month.

Fox will have been happy with his side's performance in the first half and warned them to keep up their concentration against the visitors.

As Celtic took a deserved lead, the player who had been their best performer in the first half, completely switched off.

Mooy sent a cross to the back post. The Australian keeper looked to have lost the flight of the ball.

Jota nodded into the empty net before standing in front of the silenced Dundee United fans.

Bain, Forrest, and Iwata were not used on the subs.

The chance to go 2-0 up was given to Celtic when Jota mishandled his flick. Mooy made a clear cut penalty and sent Birighitti in the wrong direction.

He has scored in his last seven games. They chanted Mooy's name for the rest of the match.

The United defender was booked for a foul on Taylor and he was lucky not to be sent off.

With no way back for Dundee United, both teams began to make a lot of changes.

The strength in depth in the Celtic squad is frightening for tired defenders and so they brought in David Turnbull, Matt O'Riley, Sead Haksabanovic and Daezen Maeda off the bench.

Oh made his debut in the last eight minutes of the game.

He only had three weeks of pre-season training and last played in November for Suwon Bluewings.

He will be hoping for more game time when Celtic play Livingston at Parkhead on Wednesday.
