Eckerd College sophomore’s flowchart helps bird sanctuary prevent ‘birdnapping’

The sophomore created an Infographic to help birds. The photos were taken by Penh Alicandra.

The organization shared important information with the community in the form of the flowchart, designed by a student at the college.

Dylan Kahn, the volunteer/internship coordinators at the Sanctuary, says that they received over 50 calls per day about baby birds that have been found on the ground. If people find a baby bird on the ground, they need to know what to do.

As part of her Principles of Marketing class, she created a baby bird flowchart. The finished product has been used all year by the organization.

There is a sanctuary on the Gulf of Mexico.

A sophomore animal studies student from Winter Park, Florida, says she was overjoyed when she found out that her design was useful for the organization.

Each semester, every Principles of Marketing student is required to find an organization to volunteer with for 20 hours. Bergbrant's students have served a number of organizations, including the Title IX Office, Friends of Strays, Metro Health and Wellness, and The Kind Mouse.

The variety of organizations allow students to hone their skills. She encourages them to challenge themselves by putting out a list. They pick something they enjoy or something that meshes with their interests. They are more driven when they do.

Babies that have fallen from a nest can cause problems for well-intentioned people.

Parents can do more harm than good if they take a baby bird out of the wild and away from its nest and leave it alone to grow and develop. The rescue team and hospital staff can focus more time and effort on the sick and injured birds that do need rescue and rehabilitation if they have an easy to follow flowchart graphic.

After consulting with the Sanctuary, she decided to use the graphic design she'd learned in previous assignments.

It was my goal to make the content easy to understand for multiple age groups. I wanted the visuals to be easier to follow since it was a diagram.

Bergbrant loves watching her students work. Every semester, local organizations create flyers, emails, social media posts and even full-length video projects to spread the word about their services.

Bergbrant told her students that they could make a difference.
