Deering, now Chief Marketing Officer for Ford Motor Co., sat down with iHeartMedia Chairman and CEO Bob Pittman to discuss her latest challenge, the electric vehicle

She said that the parallels between internal combustion engine and electric are very similar for her. Until there was a need, no one really understood why they needed the phone.

Changing consumer minds about electric vehicles is much more than a test drive. She told them that they need to experience what it's like to drive an electric car in order to be sold on it.

When I can sit in a cab with someone who's never driven an electric vehicle, it's almost like their eyes light up. That is the feeling of it.

Deering and her team have some challenges when it comes to reassuring the public about the benefits of electric vehicles. She says that the biggest worry for consumers is their car battery failing. It doesn't mean everyone knows where the charging stations are or how they work

Consumers know where a gas station is. They don't see charging stations. You leave your house with a full charge. How often do you leave the house with a full tank of gas? It's probably not going to happen. A quarter of a tank is usually what you get.

The real challenge for marketers is to get people to realize they don't need charging stations that much. How much of a problem is it for travel or how many times will they need that charging station? Is it open or closed?

The demand for electric vehicles will lead to an increase in the number of charging stations.
