The potential of fluid delivery formats for curcumin

Curcumin has been a bright star in the botanical supplements space, with significant documentation for its anti-Inflammatory andAntioxidant health benefits. The number one

There has been a surge in ready-to-drink (RTD) beverages and shots to ready-to-mix (Rtm) products that address demand for consumer choice and convenience. There are many challenges for product developers and questions for brands as they market these products to a receptive but somewhat uneducated consumer.

It's easy to understand the market interest. According to Grand View Research, the global market for curcumin products is expected to reach $58 million in 2020 and grow at a 16.1% compounded annual growth rate over the course of the next ten years. You have the makings of a solid market opportunity with the rising appeal of functional beverages.

With the global functional beverage market expected to reach $173+ billion by the year 2025, Curcumin and popular applications were bound to intersect and elevate each other to the next level.

Demand for products that fit an on-the-go lifestyle is helping to drive this trend. Curcumin andTurmeric have a growing list of health benefits, including support of heart health 2 and maintenance of cognitive function.

In the United States, tablets and capsule still dominate, but there is a growing trend for supplements in beverage and liquid forms. There are a number of factors that are encouraging this transition.

The communications and events associate for Imbibe said that young consumers aren't the only targets. Arthritis and joint replacement, flu and pneumonia, and COVID-19 are some of the top 10 health challenges facing Baby Boomers, which directly coincides with the benefits delivered by Curcumin.

Daily lifestyle choices and habits are possible. The Pandemic made consumers look at their habits in a different light, and most realized they were not drinking enough water. You can either take a capsule with a sip of water or mix in a supplement with 20 ounces of water to accomplish two health goals.

General pill fatigue is a possibility. You may need to take three or four tablets to get an effective dose of Curcumin, which is why people are tired of capsule and tablets. It is better to take a smooth liquid format on a daily basis.

Bolthouse farms recognized that the rise of these products is not just about nutrition and health benefits, but also enjoyment. According to Amy Shoemaker, marketing director at Bolthouse farms, consumers understand the benefits of turmeric, which is mostly anchored in immunity and anti-inflammation. Consumers who want to incorporate a product into their diet need a product that is enjoyable and functional.

Creating consumer-friendly products that deliver a health benefit is more difficult than just adding a pinch of turmeric to a beverage. Many people don't understand the difference.

The first thing to know is thatTurmeric and Curcumin are not interchangeable. Curcumin is one of the compounds behind the health benefits. The majority of the studies that evaluate turmeric's health properties use a higher dose of the extract. Eating a turmeric-rich diet is good for you, but drinking a beverage with added turmeric might not be as good for your health. It is a long term proposition. The market might have been confused by the association between the two ingredients.

There is potential for beverages to be a delivery format for Curcumin. According to James S. Tonkin, a beverage is always a good way to get bioactives into the body because it doesn't have to be dissolved in the stomach. He said that it comes down to how much of the compound is in a beverage or liquid. He said that if a company has an effective dose in a beverage, they would be able to bark about it.

The issue of dosage can be found in shots. It wouldn't be possible to get that into a two ounce shot with a standard dose.

Dosage is an example of a sensory challenge. Most beverages and Rtm powders are appealing for use in sporting and leisure activities, Nagabhushanam said, but "most curcumin products don't blend in liquids easily." He said thatCurcumin will give a characteristic color to a beverage even in small quantities. If you want to ensure a definite amount of curcuminoids per dose, you need a reliable method of estimating the quantity of curcuminoids.

It can be difficult to overcome manufacturing as ingredient suppliers need to share stability, solubility, and efficacy for a variety of situations.

It's difficult to work with Curcumin. "Curcumin has complex pharmacokinetics problems, so the issues are not just about a powder versus a liquid." He said that a common solution is to coat fat-soluble molecules with emulsifiers to make them compatible with water, but that doesn't mean the molecule itself becomes water-soluble. The molecule has the ability to mix in fat/oil and it also has the ability to cause biotransformation problems.

Heger said that the crux of the problem was about bioavailability, which can be changed by either water orpowder. It's not a good idea to have a liquid curcumin product unless it's associated with improved absorption, reduced metabolism, and decreased clearance from the blood, he said.

There’s a curcumin for that

New ingredients and technologies are being introduced by ingredient suppliers to address these issues.
